Maikaba Targets NPFL Title With Akwa United

Akwa United's new coach Abdul Maikaba has vowed to win the Nigerian Professional Football League title in his first season in charge of the Promise Keepers, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

Maikaba guided Wikki Tourists to a third place spot last season, securing a CAF Confederation Cup with the Bauchi-based club. He was officially unveiled as coach of Akwa United on Wednesday after he signed a two-year contract.

"My target is to win the league, having finished third and second in the past, so I want to win the league with Akwa United,” Maikaba said at his unveiling.

"I have been given a free hand to choose my players and I need this support to succeed.

"I came to Akwa United to first see what they have on the ground. I'm not in a haste to bring in new players, I want to be careful in my selection in order to achieve my target with Akwa. I can’t rule out bringing in some of my players from Wikki, this will help in passingyour philosophy to the new group, but that should not be more than one or two.

"I will encourage young players to grow in the team."

He also explained reasons why he backed out on a chance to lead Wikki Tourists to next season's CAF Confederation Cup competition.

"I left Wikki for Akwa because Akwa is an ambitious club. I look for a place that can push me to do more and Akwa has got the facilities and resources to help me reach my goal. The fans are peaceful and passionate," Maikaba added.
